Lead Data Analyst

MERIDIAN

POSITION SUMMARY: The MERIDIAN (Marine Environmental Research Infrastructure for Data Integration and Application Network) Consortium is developing a research data infrastructure to consolidate and support ocean acoustic data in Canada. This infrastructure will be a widely used resource for the Canadian and international community and is expected to drive innovation while supporting the development of the ocean soundscape atlas for Canada. MERIDIAN will also create a cloud-based platform of analytical tools that are based on various data science methods and techniques. The infrastructure will enable data discovery, data sharing, data integration and data interoperability, as well as interactive data visualization and data analysis for streaming data. As part of this initiative MERIDIAN is seeking a Lead Data Analyst. The Lead Data Analyst shall be technically knowledgeable, organized, solution oriented, creative and resourceful and be able to manage rapidly changing work priorities, work deadline oriented and communicate efficiently.

Requirements: The key responsibilities for this position will include

  1. Build, configure and test the technical components of the MERIDIAN research infrastructure integrating diverse data resources and ensuring interoperability with multiple data sources and independent data management systems.
  2. Develop and maintain technical process and procedure documentation and establish routines for the ongoing management of the operations environment.
  3. Pro-actively communicate infrastructure changes, upgrades and problems to the MERIDIAN Principal Investigator and Senior Data Manager, determine solutions, identify opportunities for improvement and mitigate future issues.
  4. Oversee daily operations of two Dalhousie University MERIDIAN Data Analysts and work closely with the project’s Data and Software Engineer to implement necessary changes to the infrastructure.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and experiences:

  1. A graduate degree in Computer Science (or commensurate experience) and a minimum of 2 years’ experience developing and establishing data infrastructures, data platforms, data centers and/or networks.
  2. Thorough knowledge and skills to install, configure, maintain and support data infrastructures.
  3. Experience with emerging technologies such as cloud computing, high performance computing and desktop virtualization.
  4. Familiar with machine learning algorithms, methodologies and tools, R, Python, Hadoop, MongoDB, PostgreSQL.
  5. Experience with or enthusiasm for ocean data will be an asset, as well as prior supervisory experience


Status: 40 hours/week    

Pay Scale: Starting at $33.75/hour

Anticipated Start Date: March 1, 2018

Term: 1 year (with possibility of renewal depending on availability of funds)

Acoustic Data Analyst

The infrastructure will enable data discovery, data sharing, data integration and data interoperability, as well as interactive data visualization and data analysis for streaming data. As part of this initiative MERIDIAN is seeking Acoustic Data Analyst. The Acoustic Data Analyst shall be technically knowledgeable, organized, solution oriented, creative and resourceful and be able to manage rapidly changing work priorities, work deadline oriented and communicate efficiently.  

Requirements: The key responsibilities for this position will include

  1. Develop algorithmic and data structure solutions for MERIDIAN’s data analysis functions that include predictive modelling of sound propagation and the integration of sound data attributed to particular ships with Automatic Identification Systems (AIS).
  2. Integrate ocean acoustic data with e.g. environmental data to enable a better interpretation of acoustic time series data.
  3. Develop strategies to optimize analytical efficiency and quality, identify and interpret trends and patterns in the data, and locate and define new process improvement opportunities.
  4. Develop and maintain technical process and procedure documentation and report on an on-going basis to Lead Data Analyst, Infrastructure.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and experiences

  1. A graduate degree in Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Oceanography, Engineering (or commensurate experience) with experience in data analysis, data manipulation and interpretation, data mining, machine learning, working with data frameworks such as Hadoop and relational database management systems such as PostgreSQL.
  2. Proven experience working with oceanographic, acoustic, environmental or other signal data and knowledge of representation, compression and analysis fundamentals.
  3. Knowledge of R and Python is an asset.

Requirements: The key responsibilities for this position will include

  1. Support the project’s Lead Data Analyst, Infrastructure in the development of the research infrastructure and ensure the interoperability of systems to effectively manage and access the data throughout their lifecycle.
  2. Assist the Senior Data Manager in the development and implementation of data management, data access, data interoperability and data sharing policies and standards for ocean acoustics datasets from multiple data sources.
  3. Contribute to the development of MERIDIAN relevant metadata and data standards that are based on current national and international requirements and regulations.
  4. Document and report on key aspects of the project development, infrastructure implementation activities and other scientific or technical requirements.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and experiences

  1. A graduate degree in Information Management, Computer Sciences, or commensurate experience in data management and/or infrastructure management.
  2. Hands-on experience in developing, implementing and/or managing institutional scale research infrastructures.
  3. Proven experience in: relational database management systems, such as PostgreSQLand national and international metadata standards, especially in developing procedures to optimise data discovery, data storage, data integration and data interoperability.
  4. Knowledge and skills in resource discovery and the capacity to engage with new technologies, Digital Object Identifier, data format standards for ocean acoustic data and best practice for handling multiple data sources and data types.
  5. Data Management Expert 1: Experience working with Big Data technologies and systems (e.g. Hadoop, MongoDB, Hixe, Spark) will be an asset. Data Management Expert 2: Experience with semantic web and related technologies (e.g. RDF, SPARQL) will be an asset.

The infrastructure will enable data discovery, data sharing, data integration and data interoperability, as well as interactive data visualization and data analysis for streaming data. As part of this initiative MERIDIAN is seeking Data Analyst and Visualization Experts. The Data Analyst and Visualization Experts shall be technically knowledgeable, organized, solution oriented, creative and resourceful and be able to manage rapidly changing work priorities, work deadline oriented and communicate efficiently.  

Requirements: The key responsibilities for this position will include

  1. Develop algorithmic and data structure solutions for MERIDIAN’s data analysis functions that include predictive modelling of sound propagation and the integration of sound data attributed to particular ships with Automatic Identification Systems (AIS).
  2. Work closely with the Software Engineer at Simon Fraser University on the development of the infrastructure’s data visualization functionality.
  3. Support the Lead Data Analyst, Infrastructure with the cross-institutional data integration, which requires substantial data post-processing on a terabyte scale to ensure a consistent data quality.
  4. Develop and maintain technical process and procedure documentation and report on an on-going basis to the Lead Data Analyst, Infrastructure

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and experiences

  1. A graduate degree in Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering (or commensurate experience) with experience in data analysis, data manipulation and interpretation, data mining, data visualization, machine learning, data frameworks such as Hadoop, and relational database management systems such as PostgreSQL.
  2. Knowledge of R and Python is essential while experience using various open-source technologies (e.g. d3) and popular commercial tools (e.g. Tableau) for visualization will be of advantage.
  3. Experience working with oceanographic, acoustic and/or environmental data would be desirable.
